I had the chance to visit the south polar regions in November and December 2010. It's a remarkable place, a much harsher environment than Alaska, even though the parts I visited were in lower latitudes. Despite the harshness, it is overflowing with life. This website is a journal of my trip, my notes and observations on what I saw, and some photographs of that extraordinary region.

You can navigate the site and my trip by following my journal entries, by navigating the maps, or by looking a species photographs. Thumbnail photos will open larger photos in a new window.

If you're thinking of going, the supplement links provide some tips, some packing suggestions and some hints.

My thanks to my brother, John, who talked me into going and helped pick the trip, and to my sister-in-law, Laurie, and her sister, Leslie, for being such good company.
