February 6, 2008 – Titusville, FL

Up at 6:30 PM and on the road at 7:20 to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. More than anywhere alse we have been in Florida, this looked like a seriously drought-struck habitat. Brown and sere. What small ponds there were had some pretty good birds, including Least Sandpipers and a Greater Yellowlegs near the entrance, and Crested Caracara and close views of Red-shouldered Hawks. Even Burrowing Owls. Surprisingly good photo opportunities.

Then to Istokapago State Park, mostly a boat ramp and short boardwalk, but pretty good birding. Nice views of Limpkin and Purple Gallinule, both trip birds.

Lastly to Highlands Hammock State Park. The Cypress Boardwalk was especially productive, with Great Crested Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Northern Parula and fine views of four different woodpeckers: Downy, Pileated, Red-bellied and Yellowbellied Sapsucker.

Muggy heat all day, even from dawn. And a long drive east to Titusville.

We're back in Titusville, this time at a seriously down-at-the-heels Super 8 Motel, to try and see the space shuttle Atlantis launch tomorrow afternoon. Long odds against a launch, 30% or lower. We’re not sure about plans B and C; it may depend on the weather.
