January 28, 2008 – Titusville, FL

We drove to Fairbanks International Airport at about 9:30 PM for the 1:30 AM red-eye from Fairbanks to Seattle. We had a little adventure at the intersection of Farmer’s Loop and Scenic Heights, when a guy in a big, white SUV turned in front of us, lost it on the ice and slid sideways at us, blocking our lane. I couldn’t stop, so I went to the left lane. There was a car coming, but I figured on the left ditch if I couldn’t get back to my lane in time. That car was slow enough that I was able to get back in my lane, but when I cut back to my lane the back end slid ahead, and I was sliding backwards in my own lane. We finally slid to a stop a few feet from a cluster of mailboxes. The adrenaline kept me awake all night.

We were on time into Seattle, and a few hours later we were on the 5.75 hour marathon flight to Orlando. We arrived on time, with all of our baggage. Then rented a car, drove FL 528 (a tollway) east to Titusville, arriving about 7:30 PM EST. We found the Hampton Inn, and on the desk clerk’s recommendation had dinner at Dixie Crossroads, where half the menu seemed to be deep fat-fried. Decent seafood; good chowder. Extremely tired, we turned in early. Not a lot of birds along the way -- not a lot of daylight.
