"Better than 40 Below" |
January 31, 2007 – Titusville, FL Started the day at Blue Heron Wetlands – the Titusville sewage treatment lagoons – at 7:30 AM sunrise. It's practically across the street from the Hampton Inn. After signing in, we birded the full outer loop over the curse of about four hours. Terrific stuff. It’s odor free, except for the initial tanks you drive by on the way to the wetlands. Trip firsts for American Bittern and Reddish Egret. A total of about 45 species, ranging from Bald Eagle down to Least Sandpiper. From there we headed south to Jetty Park below Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, which was crowded and fairly disappointing. Then through a couple of smaller parks that modestly interrupted the otherwise unending suburban sprawl. Finally Wickham Park, which is pretty large and had decent birds, including Blue Jay and Brown-headed Nuthatch. Someone at Wickham was feeding feral housecats. On the bright side, the food attracted Blue Jays, Grey Catbirds and at least seven Northern Raccoons. We lunched at the Beach House at Jetty Park; the chili dog will not make you forget a Wrigley Field Chili Dog. Dinner at Taco Bell before a medium drive back to the motel. Leave Lori Wilson Park off the birding destinations. And Jetty Park should be an early morning-only destination. |
