February 1, 2008 – Titusville, FL Reprised the Peacocks Pot Loop Road, starting at dawn. We saw only two other cars the whole morning, and, especially in the first half mile, picked up some warblers and sparrows. Excellent birding and photography again. Next tried Bucks Lake, referenced in the Great Florida Birding Trail Guide but not in Pranty’s Birder’s Guide to Florida. We walked about 1.5 miles in hot, windy weather, under threatening skies, but never had any rain. Overall, pretty disappointing. We did get a Blue-headed Vireo, a trip bird. Next tried Hatbill Park and Hatbill Road. Again, pretty slow – although it was mid-afternoon – and a lot of traffic and roadwork. We did pick up a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Wild Turkey and Cooper’s Hawk taking the back roads to Blue Heron. We ended the day with a final loop around Blue Heron in lovely late afternoon light. Great Blue Heron and Boat-tailed Grackle were doing courtship displays, and there were unusually cooperative American Bitterns. |
