10 Jun 08, early afternoon - Chevak
You get to Chevak from Bethel. Bethel, in turn, is served by Alaska Airlines and Frontier Alaska. From Bethel, Chevak is about an hour via Frontier. Chevak has a fine new runway. We spent a few hours birding around Chevak on arrival. The area on the southerly side of the old runway was especially productive, offering Yellow-rumped Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Dark-eyed Junco, American Robin, Red-necked Phalarope, Cliff Swallow, Bank Swallow, Common Redpoll, Hoary Redpoll, Tundra Swan, Long-tailed Jaeger, American Tree Sparrow, Grey-cheeked Thrush and Eastern Yellow Wagtail. From and along the bluff overlooking the Ninglingfak River, we saw Yellow Warbler, Wilson's Snipe, Common Raven, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Greater White-fronted Goose, Greater Scaup, Dunlin, Savannah and Fox Sparrow, Mew and Glaucous Gull, Greater Yellowlegs, Parasitic Jaeger and Lapland Longspur. |
